Grow Boston Greener is a collaborative effort of the
City of Boston and its partners in Boston's Urban Forest
Coalition (BUFC) to increase the Urban Tree Canopy of
the City. The initative began in 2006, when BUFC members along with citizen
volunteers inventoried both the street trees of the
City as well as overall canopy coverage across all neighborhoods.
This data placed Boston's current canopy cover
at 29%. The mission of the Grow Boston Greener initiative is to increase this percentage to a working number of 35% by planting 100,000 trees in the City of Boston by the year 2020.
